Innovation and Safety Drive Coastal Defence Survey
LandScope Engineering recently completed a utility survey to support the detailed design of a major coastal defence project in southern England.
The 3.1 km site presented several challenges. These included restricted access, working close to water, slippery surfaces and the risk of voids beneath the coastal structures. The area also remained open to pedestrians, vehicles and holidaymakers.
Vehicle-mounted GPR was not suitable across much of the site. Therefore, our team developed a safer solution using a combination of push-cart GPR and a compact remote-controlled tracked unit.
The tracked unit pulled the GPR equipment across slippery sections of the sea defences. This reduced the need for surveyors to walk over hazardous surfaces while still capturing the data needed for the project.
The survey also included PAS 128 Type A and Type B utility detection and verification. As a result, the client received detailed utility information to support the next design stage.
This project demonstrates how innovation, careful planning and adaptable equipment can help deliver safe surveys in challenging coastal environments.
