3D Laser Scanning of a Survey Vessel

9th February, 2016

LandScope was recently contracted to survey a vessel under construction in Essex, a project that involved:

  • The installation of a survey control network on board the vessel;
  • The accurate positioning of hydrographic survey sensors and systems;
  • The production of a 3D model of the vessel, showing the position of the installed sensors and systems;
  • And, the generation of a report confirming the quality of the installation.

The client expressed a particular interest in the offset values and reference axis rotations between the vessel’s Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and the installed multibeam echosounder (MBES), which is capable of rotating from 0° through 50° on a specially designed bracket.

In order to meet the client’s requirements our team utilised the Faro Focus 3D to acquire the laser scan data, which will be used to produce the requested 3D model. The survey achieved the overall point cloud registration accuracy requirements of 2mm at 95% confidence.

We also produced a report confirming the position and alignment of the hydrographic sensors, including information on the offset values and reference axis rotations between the vessel’s IMU and MBES, as requested by the client.
