International Women

8th March, 2023

In honour of International Women’s Day we asked our longest-serving and our newest female surveyors what they enjoy about the industry and why other women should join them in this versatile and dynamic career path.

Jo Painter has been with LandScope for more than a decade, advancing from field team surveyor to Manager of the Processing Hub. She coordinates Deliverable Workflow and oversees Quality Assurance, alongside her important pastoral role to support and train junior members of the technical team. Here’s what she had to say:

“It’s wonderful to see more women entering into careers within the surveying industry, and diversity improving overall. I would encourage anyone to consider joining, as it is a career I personally find incredibly interesting, varied and challenging.”

Mirela Hyka came to LandScope last summer for her final Industry Workplace module of her University of Glasgow’s Land and Hydrographic Surveying Postgraduate Master’s degree. Having many years’ prior experience, including a MSc in Geomatic Engineering at Tirana University, an internship at the National Agency of Natural Resources, and as a cartographer in her homeland Albania, she brings many skills to her role, as well as infectious enthusiasm.

” I love being a surveyor because every day is a challenge, full of excitement and you get to learn so much and improve yourself day by day. As a surveyor you play a central role in shaping the world around us and gain the satisfaction of seeing your project develop and improve from A to Z.

Studying engineering has been one of my biggest passions, mainly because my uncle is a geologist. I encountered the prejudices of many people, when first decided to study in the faculty of geology and mining including my own family because is mainly man dominated environment. This prejudice didn’t stop me and here I am today working as a land surveyor for a well known company such as LandScope.”
