Overcoming Access Challenges on a Busy Bridge Survey

6th August, 2026

Surveying busy highways requires careful planning, the right technology and an experienced team.

LandScope Engineering recently completed a detailed bridge survey over a busy dual carriageway. The work will support the future replacement of the structure.

Working Safely Under Traffic Management

High traffic levels made daytime access impossible. Therefore, our surveyors worked at night under planned traffic management.

The road closure provided a short working window. Every stage had to be carefully planned and coordinated. This allowed our team to gather the required data safely and avoid further closures.

Combining Survey Technologies

We used 3D laser scanning to capture the bridge, highway and surrounding structures quickly and accurately.

Our team also completed a utility survey in accordance with PAS 128. This located key services around the bridge, including BT infrastructure, drainage and an oil pipeline.

Locating these utilities was essential for the safe design and future replacement of the structure.

Turning Challenging Access into Reliable Data

After completing the site work, we produced a registered point cloud and an accurate Revit model.

Together with the PAS 128 utility information, these deliverables gave the design team a clear view of the bridge and surrounding site. They also provided reliable information about both above-ground and below-ground conditions.

Our experience of working on busy highways allows us to plan around road closures, traffic management and restricted access. As a result, we can capture the required information efficiently and reduce the risk of repeat visits.

Supporting Project Success

Difficult access does not have to delay a project. Early planning, experienced surveyors and the right technology can reduce risk and support better design decisions.

On this project, our coordinated approach provided the client with the information needed to progress the bridge replacement design.
