PAS 128 Survey of a Busy Dual Carriageway

LandScope completed a full PAS 128 utility survey across four lanes of a busy dual carriageway and a pedestrian-controlled crossing. The survey was delivered at night to minimise disruption while protecting the survey team and road users.

The Challenge

The survey area included four traffic lanes, a central reservation and a pedestrian crossing. Therefore, careful planning was essential.

Traffic still needed to move through the area. However, our teams also required safe access to each part of the carriageway. As a result, the survey and traffic management programmes had to work closely together.

Our Solution

First, LandScope planned the survey and appointed a specialist traffic management supplier. We then coordinated the night-time closures and each stage of the work.

The survey included:

  • Ground penetrating radar (GPR)
  • Electromagnetic location (EML)
  • Inspection of accessible utility covers
  • Laser scanning of the road surface
  • Survey control and utility positioning

In addition, we developed a safe system of work for every survey stage. Traffic management was then moved as the work progressed. Therefore, our surveyors could work safely while controlled traffic movements continued.

The Results

Finally, we combined the GPR, EML and laser scanning information into one coordinated survey. This provided a clear record of the road surface and the underground utilities.

As a result, the client received reliable PAS 128 data to support design and reduce utility risk. Furthermore, the detailed survey will help the project team plan future construction with greater confidence.
